Acquilla Gbunblee
Masters Level Therapist
I am passionate about helping individuals navigate life’s challenges and achieve their personal goals. With a warm and supportive approach, I strive to create a safe space for my clients to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
I was born in Liberia, West Africa, and raised in Houston, TX. When I was nine years old, my father earned the opportunity to migrate our family to the United States in hopes of giving his children a better chance at life and the “American Dream.” This dream has been the driving force behind my education and counseling pursuits. I achieved my bachelor's degree in psychology from Sam Houston State University. Currently, I am a graduate student at Lamar University in the Marriage and Family Therapy program, working towards a master’s degree.
I have always been intrigued by the human mind and the reasons behind our decisions and different perspectives. My journey began at MHMRA as a direct care staff, where I worked with individuals with various mental illnesses. I was responsible for supervising clients, ensuring they took their medication daily, completed ADLs, conducted groups, and more. This role deepened my understanding of the importance of consistent support and care in mental health.
My counseling approach is primarily rooted in Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). I emphasize my clients’ health, strengths, skills, resources, and coping abilities to help them achieve their future goals. In addition to SFBT, I appreciate the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approach.
I have over 12 years of experience working with adults and children with developmental and mental disabilities, and 11 years of experience investigating child abuse and neglect. I have worked with various organizations and formed professional connections with local women’s shelters, law enforcement, CASA, family court, schools, and other community stakeholders.
Outside of my professional life, I am a mother, a publisher, and a photographer. I am also involved in various community projects, such as the HATS OFF podcast and Maternal Ark. These endeavors allow me to connect with others and give back to the community in meaningful ways.
My hobbies include meditating, spending time with my daughter, cooking- my form of therapy and looking for ways to enrich myself. I pride myself on giving grace in every moment and appreciating the moment for what it is.
